A PRACTICAL BEGINNING

How to pray and study a Psalm

Let biblical poetry give words to praise, grief and hope.

Read the whole Psalm

Notice its movement. Does it begin in distress and end in trust? Does it call a whole community to praise? Avoid forcing every Psalm into the same pattern.

Listen for the images

Rocks, shepherds, shelters and paths are poetic images. Ask what they communicate rather than flattening them into literal descriptions.

Make room for lament

Some Psalms speak from anguish or protest. Bringing grief honestly to God is part of the biblical prayer tradition; it is not a promise that pain disappears immediately.

Respond without forcing it

Choose a line to reflect on, then pray in your own words. If a line is hard to understand, record your question instead of pretending that you have resolved it.
