Begin with Jesus
If you are new to the Bible, begin with Mark or John. Read one chapter or a short complete scene each day. You do not need to understand every detail before you continue.
Notice what the passage actually says
Who is speaking? To whom? What has just happened? Read the paragraphs before and after a verse. A sentence quoted alone may sound different from the whole argument.
Read different kinds of writing differently
The Bible contains narrative, poetry, wisdom, prophecy, letters and apocalyptic visions. A poetic image is not a scientific formula; an account of someone’s action is not automatically a command to imitate it.
Move from observation to interpretation
First describe what is present in the text. Then consider what it meant to its first audience. Compare related passages without using them to erase the distinct setting of this passage.
Respond with care
Ask what the passage reveals about God, human life and your responsibilities. Write one question, one observation and one practical response. Discuss difficult conclusions with a trusted church leader.
