A PRACTICAL BEGINNING

A better way to ask a Bible question

Honest questions deserve context, evidence and a patient answer.

Name the question precisely

Write the passage and the part you find difficult. Is your question about a word, a moral claim, a historical event or a theological conclusion? Those are different kinds of questions.

Separate evidence from inference

Ask which claims are stated in the passage, which are interpretations, and which depend on outside historical or scientific evidence. A confident tone is not evidence.

Look for the strongest alternative

Describe another interpretation fairly before evaluating it. Christians agree about many central beliefs while disagreeing about some passages and secondary doctrines.

Read the answer alongside the passage

Use this site’s chapter links and comparison tools. Check that the explanation fits the wider passage instead of relying only on a short quotation.

Keep a question notebook

Record the question, what you have checked and what is still uncertain. You can email the editor with the page you were reading. Replies are personal correspondence, not an instant answer service.
